IDP Check

Do you need an IDP for British Isles?

Not legally required, but worth carrying. No destination on this trip demands an International Driving Permit from a US licence holder, though United Kingdom and Ireland recommend one for police stops and rental desks.Answers for a US driving licence. Country by country

The rule that matters on a multi-country trip is the strictest one on the route: you carry a permit for the whole journey or you do not. Here the strictest is United Kingdom (recommended).

  • United Kingdom Recommended

Valid US license accepted for 12 months from your last entry; no IDP legally required. Some rental firms still ask for one.

  • Ireland Recommended

US citizens may drive on a US license for a tourist visit of up to 12 months. An IDP is optional - apply through AAA before you travel if you want one for the rental counter.
